Grand Pre is rural community in Kings County. It is a French name which translates to Great Meadow. It is on a piece of land that borders the Minas Basin, as well as the Gaspereau and Cornwallis Rivers. Grand Pre was settled by Acadians who came from the original settlement in Annapolis Royal. The Acadians worked hard to build dikes to stop the water and turned marshland into very fertile farmland. Acadians were forcefully removed from the area in 1755 during the Great Upheaval by the British.
After the upheaval, the area was resettled by New England Planters in 1760. One of the planters descendants was Sir Robert Laird Borden who became the eighth Prime Minister of Canada. He was born in Grand Pre in 1854.
Today Grand Pre has a National Historic Site which is there to commemorate the Acadian people, the work they did in the area, as well as their deportation. There is also some wineries, and a very well known coffee company located in the town, which is becoming quite a tourist area.
